What influenced your journey in pursuing the Arts?
My heritage, the sharing of story and living of life. Also the struggle to find a place, I was brought up in a world where the written word and commercial activity were a focus. I know I see things differently than the western world expects. I found creativity allowed me to find my sense of wholeness.
Who and what inspires you?
I am a story teller, I am inspired by nature and the world around me. I hear what is happening and reflect it into my creativity. I love the form, the texture and the power our natural world shares with me, and the challenge I find to recreate…
What is your medium of choice?
I work with ceramics, harakeke, glass and metals at present. The diversity of different mediums construct allows opportunity to use in differing ways to tell my story…
How would you describe your creative style?
My creative style is my story…my story is the way I see the world through my heart. In my constant learning I understand that we all see things differently and indeed my style reflects that its not what my eye sees as much as my heart feels.
What does your art mean to you?
Art/creativity is a way to find calmness, resolve challenges and live peacefully.
Do you have a fave piece of art and if so whom is it by, and why is it your fave?
I am not sure I have a specific artist or piece of work….all inspires, all has a story for me whether it’s a technique that surprises or a feeling it evokes. Art creates an opportunity for growth.
How would you describe the Arts in Aotearoa?
Art in NZ reflects our eclectic gathering of humanity, we are a gathering of difference… and for me there is a rawness that comes from being on an island, away from generations of constraint and conflict.
